Organic Coffee Beans Archives

I recently moved to Katy and am missing the affordable bulk organic fair-trade whole-bean coffee I used to buy at my local co-op stores in Ann Arbor. Does anyone know of some place in my area that offers similar coffee products?

I’d prefer to shop co-ops/local stores if possible, but the term "co-op" seems to mean something different here than in Michigan (they seem to specialize in vegetables). Thank you to all in advance!

Organic coffee is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. It is grown without the use of pesticides and fertilizers which in turn helps out the soil.Organic coffee is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment.

In order for coffee to be certified and sold as organic in the United States, it must be produced in accordance with U.S. standards for organic production and certified by an agency accredited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The term Organic indicates that no chemicals
were used in the cultivation of the coffee. In order to proclaim that a coffee is Certified Organic, a recognized third party certifier must document the cultivation of the coffee for three years running and issue an Organic Certificate

Organic coffee is grown in over 40 countries. To name a few; Bolivia, Burundi, Brazil, Cameroon, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador,Ghana, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mexico, Nepal, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru,Philippines, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, United Republic of and even in the United States (Hawaii). As I said there are more, but these are the biggest producers.

Coffee contains a lot of antioxidants. Antioxidants are what you need to fight all of the free radicals that can cause cell damage spreading through your body.Coffee contains the same type of antioxidants found in fruits, veggies and green tea. You can get antioxidants from both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee as long as the beans are sufficiently roasted.

It also contains caffeine. The caffeine in these 100% organic coffees is in pure form, straight from the coffee bean plant, making it pungent and potent and a natural way to gain some pep. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, alleviating fatigue and increasing wakefulness. After drinking a cup of coffee, caffeine is rapidly and efficiently absorbed from the digestive system and starts to work in the body just 20 minutes after consumption and the effects may last for several hours.

Some people are more sensitive to caffeine than others are and too much can cause unwanted effects such as anxiety, restlessness, irritability and sleep problems.

The benefits of coffee are tremendous though. Drinking coffee has been proven to reduce the risk of such cancers as bladder cancer, bowel cancer, pancreatic cancer, and ovarian cancer. It has also been linked to reducing the development of type 2 diabetes and liver disease as well as the growth of gall stones.

Coffee even offsets some of the damage caused by other vices, some research indicates. Tests have shown that people who smoke and are heavy drinkers have less heart disease and liver damage when they regularly consume large amounts of coffee compared to those who don’t.

I have some organic "ground" bag coffee here and I’m looking to buy a coffee press – the steel french press I’m looking at recommends using "coarsely ground" instead of "fine grind." Will this be fine or will the metal filter get clogged?

I’m also concerned about using a press that doesn’t remove Cafestol from coffee beans. A traditional "drip-brewed" like automatic coffee makers will remove it due to the paper filters. On one hand you have Cafestol shown to increase serum cholesterol by 8% (.pdf source: http://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/ntp/htdocs/Chem_Background/ExSumPdf/Cafestol.pdf ) but on the other may be an antagonist to the development of Parkinson’s ( http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn18814-parkinsons-protection-without-caffeine-or-nicotine.html ) So I don’t know if a press is a wise or poor choice of investment to my health.

Okay, I eat snacks during the day ’cause I really don’t do good with full meals. So, here’s everything I’ve eaten so far I haven’t eaten supper yet, so when I do I’ll put it in additional details ].

For breakfast I ate one bowl of cereal..[not a large portion-- and it's not a junky cereal with a lot of sugar, this is a natural and organic cereal with only natural sugars..and 1% milk].

-Then later [about 1 and a half hours later] I ate a bowl of cucumbers with lemon and salt, and a few small carrots on the side.

-Then [about 1 hour later] I ate 2 mandarine’s. [like an orange type thing, i'm sure you know what it is]..

-then not long after that I drank a tiny bit of black coffee, *no extra stuff added, I mean pure black coffee.* lol..and a cube of pineapple.

-Then for another snack [about an hour later] which was a fresh smoothie and a few ORGANIC cookies, with all natural things in it.

And now I just ate a banana and it’s around 6:30pm.
& for dinner I ate: one piece of grilled chicken and black beans on the side.

Additional stuff:
Ingredients to the fresh smoothie:
-one fresh banana
-one fresh mango
-a few fresh strawberries.
^^everything is market fresh^^ XD

I’m 12 years old, & I’m a girl.
Just thought that age probably does matter, and gender.

& just tell me if I’ve eaten alright, or is it unhealthy for me to eat like that?
Thanks!

Oh and I’ll probably remember some additional details, so whenever you guys ask me a question in one of the answers you’ve posted, go back to the question and I’ll post whatever you asked me in the additional details. :)

Foods to Eat
Use organic fruits and vegetables as they have less pollutants and chemicals. Organic food also has a higher nutritional content than non-organic commercialized produce.
Basically your diet should mostly consist of juiced, raw, frozen, or lightly steamed fruits and veggies. Corn and avocados should be avoided, white potatoes can be eaten only in moderation. Eating a variation each day will ensure you are getting enough vitamins and keep this diet as interesting as possible.
Foods to Avoid
Here is a brief list of foods to avoid while on this plan. To get the full detoxing effects, stick to the diet and be sure that you don’t cheat!
Dairy and animal products
Bread, pasta, grains, cereal
Chocolate
Nuts
Sauces
Pickled vegetables or canned fruit
Alcohol and cigarettes
Coffee and tea (except green and herbal)
Meal Plans
- Breakfast
Variations of fruit or fruit puree are great for breakfast. They are nutritious, filling and the natural sugars will give you energy to get through the morning.
To make a fruit puree, cut up your fruit and place in a pot on the stove with a small amount of water. Cover and leave it on a low heat until the fruit is soft. Now just throw it in the blender and add a squeeze of fresh lemon to taste. I also like to add a little cinnamon.
My favorite blends contain apples, plums, nectarines, pears and berries, but really anything goes. You can also mix it up a bit by using your blender to achieve different consistencies.
- Lunch & Dinner
For your main two meals its important to keep calories low but nutrition high. A vegetable puree soup is the answer. This will give you energy to get through the day and all the nutrients you need.
Cut up your vegetables, add approximately one cup of vegetable stock, and cover on a low heat until the vegetables are soft. Now throw it in the blender and spice it up with a raw clove of garlic or jalapeño pepper (only a little as it’s very spicy!). I also like to add cilantro and a little olive oil.
I like to experiment with different vegetables for this soup. Great ideas are spinach and broccoli, collard greens, zucchini, onion, carrots and sweet potatoes. Beans also make a great addition. I like to use chickpeas but be sure they are organic.
- Desserts & Snacks
This diet can sometimes leave you feeling hungry (it wouldn’t be a diet if it didn’t!), so its important to have some filling snacks around for when you need a boost.
Fruit smoothies are a great options for dessert or a snack between meals. You need to buy packs of frozen organic fruits from your supermarket. These lock all the goodness into the fruit and are very convenient. I actually find that frozen bananas taste much better in a smoothie than fresh ones so I peel ripe bananas and put them in a ziplock bag in the freezer.
Just add ice and a little water, then blend away! I like blends of blueberries, strawberries, blackberries and banana. Its really up to you to find a few combinations that you love. Be creative!
- Drinks
Freshly squeezed juices are very detoxing and a great way to get some condensed nutrition into your body. Fresh juice is also packed full of enzymes which are fundamental in maintaining good health and preventing disease.
Some ideas for recipes – try playing around with these super-healthy ingredients. Cucumbers, apples, carrot, ginger, garlic, beet and broccoli.
Don’t forget to drink Green Tea. This is so effective as a diet aid because it increases your metabolism and reduces your appetite. It has also been used for more than 4000 years in Chinese medicine, to cure ailments ranging from headaches to depression.

oh and right now im 5 ft 7 and 120lbs and i want to get down 5-10lbs

Do you think all this new "health" stuff like eating organic food and such is mostly fueled by Marketing? Seems ALOT of people are eating healthier and spending TONS of money on pills, diets, etc., to live longer. My great grandmother is 101 and is good condition considering her age. To this day, she drinks coffe, eats fried pork chops, fried corn, fried chicken,.etc. I’m from Tennessee if you haven’t noticed. I think that this whole "organic" blitz and eating healthy stuff is more about companies making money. My great grandmother has never smoked or drank a day in her life in which I think that contributes more to living a long healthy life.

I’m 34 and eat healthy but don’t take it as far as most people out west in California seem to do. I have 3 grandmothers over 80 and none of them has ever drank or smoked. I just think drinking and smoking are WAY detrimental to your health than trying to eat these crazy expensive "organic" foods. Anyways, I told my wife I’m going to eat like my family has always done..fried foods from and an Iron Skillet and add tons of bacon grease when making corn bread, green beans etc..and at least 2-5 cups of black coffee everyday. But I’ll never drink, except an occational glass of wine, and NEVER smoke.

TO LOSE 20 POUNDS IN 30 DAYS? would this work?!?

Rule #1: Avoid “white” carbohydrates
Avoid any carbohydrate that is — or can be — white. The following foods are thus prohibited, except for within 1.5 hours of finishing a resistance-training workout of at least 20 minutes in length: bread, rice, cereal, potatoes, pasta, and fried food with breading. If you avoid eating anything white, you’ll be safe.

Rule #2: Eat the same few meals over and over again
The most successful dieters, regardless of whether their goal is muscle gain or fat loss, eat the same few meals over and over again. Mix and match, constructing each meal with one from each of the three following groups:

Proteins:
Egg whites with one whole egg for flavor
 Chicken breast or thigh
 Grass-fed organic beef
Pork

Legumes:
Lentils
Black beans
 Pinto beans

Vegetables:
Spinach Asparagus
 Peas
 Mixed vegetables

Eat as much as you like of the above food items. Just remember: keep it simple. Pick three or four meals and repeat them. Almost all restaurants can give you a salad or vegetables in place of French fries or potatoes. Surprisingly, I have found Mexican food, swapping out rice for vegetables, to be one of the cuisines most conducive to the “slow carb” diet.

Most people who go on “low” carbohydrate diets complain of low energy and quit, not because such diets can’t work, but because they consume insufficient calories. A 1/2 cup of rice is 300 calories, whereas a 1/2 cup of spinach is 15 calories! Vegetables are not calorically dense, so it is critical that you add legumes for caloric load.

Some athletes eat 6-8x per day to break up caloric load and avoid fat gain. I think this is ridiculously inconvenient. I eat 4x per day:

10am – breakfast

1pm – lunch 5pm – smaller second lunch 7:30-9pm – sports training
 10pm – dinner

Rule #3: Don’t drink calories
Drink massive quantities of water and as much unsweetened iced tea, tea, diet sodas, coffee (without white cream), or other no-calorie/low-calorie beverages as you like. Do not drink milk, normal soft drinks, or fruit juice. I’m a wine fanatic and have at least one glass of wine each evening, which I believe actually aids sports recovery and fat-loss. Recent research into reservation supports this.

Rule #4: Take one day off per week
I recommend Saturdays as your “Dieters Gone Wild” day. I am allowed to eat whatever I want on Saturdays, and I go out of my way to eat ice cream, Snickers, Take 5, and all of my other vices in excess. I make myself a little sick and don’t want to look at any of it for the rest of the week. Paradoxically, dramatically spiking caloric intake in this way once per week increases fat loss by ensuring that your metabolic rate (thyroid function, etc.) doesn’t down regulate from extended caloric restriction. That’s right: eating pure crap can help you lose fat.

Let me tell you a little story about how I discovered a coffee alternative that really truly works!

I like most North Americans had been suffering with low energy, feeling tired all the stinkin time, feeling like I could never get enough sleep & crashing and feeling terrible from all the coffee all the time.

Most of the time I really felt like I should be auditioning for the part of the Zombie in some really bad old “B” movie. I had no energy, my zest for life was seriously lacking and even when I did have time off I was so tired all I wanted to do was sleep.

But Now those days are now over for good!!!

Now I have all the energy I want (unless I eat way too much sugar and crash off of it). The only time I really get tired is if it’s late at night and it really is time to go to sleep anyway.
It’s true! I now have more energy than I have time in the day. Trust me this was not always the case. I used to be like lots of low energy people and run out of energy with still half a day left to go before I could sleep.

I’m sure you know some of these feelings that I’m describing to you.

The problem is coffee doesn’t cut it! You likely know the feeling when you drink too much coffee all too well. First you get just way too wired and strung out, I mean to the point where Charles Manson thinks YOU need to calm down.

Then you start to do what I call the “BONK”. That’s where you have drunk so much coffee that you are now way past the point of being wired and strung out. Now you’re in this weird sort of never, never land only you aren’t Peter Pan. You drink More and more coffee and the more you drink the more and harder you crash. This is the BONK in full swing.

But what are you supposed to do about it? Is there really a coffee alternative that actually works and doesn’t taste like motor oil?

The answer to your $64,000 question (a bit of nostalgia there) is YES! There really is a coffee alternative that really works and it’s called Yerba Mate. I discovered for myself this little natural miracle of South America while on trip to Paraguay for other business purposes. And I have been loving my energy levels ever since.

Like all things there are good product brands and terrible brands. In this case the terrible brands happen too far out weight the good ones. Why? Well the local population in most South American countries is always on the lookout for cheap, and when have you ever seen cheap and good at the same time? Well, maybe once or twice but not often.

So, try the best coffee alternative on the planet, try some high quality yerba mate today. Make sure it’s all just the leaves (without sticks) and be sure it’s Organic or it could be full of pesticides and lord knows what else and you will be all set.

you will finally be loving your energy levels just like I do now.

So I have been building up my compost heap, and I recently cleaned out my cabinets (I’m going mostly organic and preservative free in my diet). I found in the process a lot of canned, expired vegetables, and am adding these to the pile. (Simple stuff, canned green beans and corn, that type of thing, I’ve drained them and added them already). However, I also found expired flour, coffee, corn meal, catnip, and baking soda and flour. Are these things safe, and beneficial, to add to my compost heap, or should they just be disposed of?
