I have purchased a package of coffee beans from Starbuck’s and had them grind them for me. I know they already have some grounded, but I dont know how long they have been sitting there for. I bought a small grinder once and have never used it once, it was a waste. Shop around for a coffee maker, you should be able to get one for less.
pretty much all coffee makers around $40 use ground coffee. If you can afford it, I’d buy whole beans and a grinder. It tastes much better, but it is more expensive. If it’s just for simple coffee, then I’d buy ground coffee.
Starbucks sells pre ground coffee, so you can get that and it will be just as good as the other coffee if you’re not a coffee-nut.
there are coffee pots that have a grind and brew but are rather costly you can get a grinder for 10-15 bucks and the coffee is night and day to preground
A few points to help you clarify your purchase…
All coffee makers make coffee from "grounds" (i.e. ground up coffee beans). To make coffee from a coffee maker, all you do (more or less) is just add the grounds into the filter unit, add water into the water unit, press on and it starts making coffee. The water is heated and it drips over the coffee grounds. The finished product, coffee is then dripped into the pot sitting on a warming plate below.
Option 1: Some people prefer to grind their own coffee beans just before making the coffee. At that point they will need a separate coffee grinder. There are a few fancy coffee makers that combine both the grinder and the maker in the same unit.
Option 2: Some people don’t want to bother grinding the beans and just by pre-ground coffee (can or in the bag).
Option 3: Some people want to combine the first two options…they buy whole bean coffees (bulk or pre-packaged) at the supermarket and use the instore grinder. Once ground they just repackage it back in the bag and take it to the cashier for purchase.
It all depends on what you want or what he prefers to do. Either way a great cup of coffee is in store for him. What a thoughtful and tasty gift.
