How do I know if my coffee has been roasted completely?
I’ve been buying a certain blend of coffee at Whole Foods. I went to pick up some more yesterday and I thought it looked different in the bin: lighter in color most certainly.
When I took it home I compared it to the leftover beans I had from the last purchase, and the new beans were very noticeably lighter in color. I tried to see if there was an aroma difference, but it was hard to tell.
Tonight I ground up my first batch (to perc tomorrow morning) and normally the grounds stick to my grinder a lot due to the oils. These grounds were incredibly easy to remove from the grinder compared to usual, indicating to me there must not be much oil coming out. The grounds also looked a lot lighter in color.
I’m thinking something was not done properly when roasting this batch. I am thinking of returning it and buying something else this time.
Any coffee experts out there can help me figure out what is different? And does this mean I got gipped on my coffee?! =)
I’ll see what it tastes like in the morning!

I actually work at Whole Foods and have worked with the coffee. I know where they get their coffee that they use for the bins. It should be Allegro coffee. I find them to be very consistent, so I don’t think the batch would have been roasted incorrectly. Different kinds of coffee are roasted to different levels. I think the most likely thing that happened is that someone put the wrong kind of coffee in the bin, or mislabeled one of the coffees. So you probably accidentally got a different kind of coffee that was a lighter roast. You can return anything to whole foods, and get your money back. I’m sure if you talked to the person in charge of the coffee, they could help you out. I personally like lighter roasts, so you might like this kind better!
Oh, and different regions do things differently. I know Allegro sells green (unroasted) beans, so I suppose your region might roast the coffee they put in the bins. We don’t do that in my region, so I’m not sure. Again, you could ask and I’m sure they would help. If they do roast their own beans, it is possible that they didn’t roast it to the level they normally do. Probably a newbie or something.
since they roast their own coffee, you may be right. I would bring it back and get an exchange or a different kind or just your money back. Whole Foods is good about that stuff.
