I am moving to japan, is coffee and appropriate gift for co-workers?
I am from portland and was thinking of bringing some coffee from a great roaster here. Is this ok for co-workers at a software company? I am also thinking of bringing some local chocolates and treats. Do you think I will have a problem with customs when I arrive? Thanks a lot.

dont they drink tea more then coffee?
usually tea is the proper drink to give them. Giving them a cup of tea is a way to say you want to be their friend and that you honor them
Japanese are very gracious, and will accept a gift that is given genuinely.
That being said – ASK SOMEONE!
Doesn’t your company have a contact person or a mentor for you? How are you going to learn the train system?
Call your company and ask them to appoint someone to help you navigate your way for the first 9 mths.
Man, that would be FABULOUS! But i would avoid the chocolates. They may not survive the trip
Yeah, tea too!
I think that your co-workers would love it, if they individually like coffee. But as far as customs, you may want to check into that one further. Hopefully your roaster will vacuum-seal your package for you.
Chocolates are ok. Coffee: you shouldn’t have problems with customs if it’s a vacuum sealed package. Coffee is a great gift, as it is very expensive in Japan.
