Is it possible to make a cup of coffee from coffee beans (eg Starbucks) without a coffee maker?
I ask this question in the Christmas section because you always see gift packs with coffee beans and it’s not instant coffee. And I am always worried that the gift receipient doesn’t have a coffee maker.

Yes, you can make it “murphy style” or some refer to it as cowboy or camp side style. Just use the ground bean and a pot of water, bring to a boil and let the grounds settle. Sometimes I still prefer the way brewing coffee this way gets you by the short and curlies.
If it is whole bean it might not work so well, but they could use a small spice mill or even a mortar and pestle if need be to grind up the beans.
You don't need a coffee maker for actual coffee beans.
As long as the beans are ground up, they can be used with a basic filter, or through a perculator, etc.
You can buy filter's from hospitality shops. If you ask for one for ground coffee they should be able to point you in the right direction.
If I were desperate for caffeine I could think of a way to do it (e.g. Turkish coffee is made by boiling the grounds in water, then letting them settle to the bottom of the pot), but if someone doesn’t have a coffee maker, there’s a good chance that the reason is because they don’t actually like coffee!
Best bet is to only give coffee beans as a gift to someone you know will appreciate them. Like me! ;)
so buy them a bag of coffee and a french press.
if they don’t have a coffee maker they can still make coffee.
if they do have a coffee maker, they will enjoy a purer form of coffee and realize how much their filtered coffee tastes like used bath water.
