Why do I make such bad tasting coffee? What am I doing wrong?
I make the worst coffee on earth! I’ve been practicing for 10 years. I can’t say for sure why it is bad, not consistently strong or weak, but it is bitter with an unpleasant taste. Sort of sharp on the mouth. It is not smooth and soft on the mouth like what I have at a coffee shop or even at a fast food drive through.
I have used nearly every brand of coffee that is offered on the market from cheap to very expensive. I have tried organic too.
I’ve had 4 coffeemakers in the last 10 years, each pot improving in quality but with consistently bad results. I now use a Delonghi 10 cup model that is only 2 months old. It uses a gold metal filter basket.
I use cold water that is filtered through my fridge filter. This is the same water that I drink & has a crisp, clean taste.
I keep my coffeepot and carafe clean & descale regularly.
I typically make 4-6 cups of coffee (6oz of water per cup). 1-2 tbsp grinds per cup, using instructions on bag of beans.

One thing you need to do is use a paper filter inside the maker. There is a small dust that will go through a metal filter and will make the coffee bitter. I use a plastic spoon that is rounded full with one for every two cups of water. Keep the coffee in the refrigerator to aid in its freshness if not in an airtight container. You can adjust the amount of coffee for the strength, but don’t over do it. It will be bitter if too strong. I have always liked a good arabaca/columbian blend. It seems to give smoothness to the strength. Does not have to be most expensive on market. Some coffees have a very high acid content and will be bitter. Folgers is one of the worst for general sales.
My only thought is that it might be the cleaning agents you are using to clean the machine and the pot.
I used to make rubbish coffe too until *whispers* i started putting small lumps of vanilla ice cream in the coffee and stirring it in, and now they taste great!

im not best coffee maker in the world but this is how i make my coffee…
get a cup, and fill it with hot water
1 teaspoon of coffee
you can add milk/creamer if you want too
then 2 teaspoon of sugar….
cant imagine that drive thru coffee is better than yours
but try maybe a small dash of cinnamon in your grounds
for everyday coffee i like the eight oclock red bag its pretty yummy
one rounded teaspoon for every cup of water the carafe says i have
also if you use milk in your coffee half and half really does make a big difference its so much more creamy and rich tasting than milk

not trying to be smart, but how is it even possible to screw it up that much???? lol i hope you figure it out, i have screwed it up before by not puttin enough coffee mix, but it seems like u considered every option lol. im sorry this is funny to me, but i dont think you can ever make coffee

Sweetie, I have no help for you. You are not alone. No matter what I have tried, my coffee tastes like swill. Like you, I have purchased different machines, tried all brands of coffee, even resorted to bottled water!!! No change. No matter what I do, I am the only one who can tolerate my brew. I guess I have gotten used to it, but to others I refer to my coffee as a "liquid tonsillectomy". Perhaps you and I have both offended a Gypsy in a former life and are now under a mystical curse. I used to have this problem. The best advice I can offer is that since it is a ten cup model….try using 3 tablespoons of the coffee of your choice. We like ours a little stronger so I use 4, but I think it may be the amount of coffee you are using. The bag instructions are not always right, especially when it comes to your personal tastes. Also, try different creamers, and maybe just try using tap water…at room temp, not cold.
Clean your coffee maker. Add a pinch of salt to your coffee to take out bitterness.
Maybe try bottled water next time, or don’t leave the coffee sitting in the pot for more than 20 minutes before drinking it. Overheating coffee can also make it bitter, so see if there’s a way you can turn the temperature of the hotplate down (higher-end coffee makers have an adjustment for that).

100 % Arabica beans and look for a lighter roast. French Roast tends to be very dark and bitter since technically speaking it is burnt.
I take it that you are using a dripolator, these tend to burn the coffee if the carafe is left on the hot plate for even a short period of time. If your first cup is ok then it turns to shyte, this will be it.
