Why is granulated sugar getting less sweet?
I have to use at least twice as much granulated sugar as I used to for baking and sweetening my coffee & such.
I know it’s not just my taste buds because all store-bought items like Pepsi, Coke, Hershey’s bars, Hostess cakes and other such things taste just as sweet as they used to.
So what’s going on?
Are they adding some other, cheaper substance to the sugar to maximize profit?
Have they depleted the ground where they grow the sugar cane & beets?
Or what?

I’ve noticed this for quite some time. I too thought it was just my imagination. I don’t eat much sweets so it’s not that I’m used to sweets or needing more sugar to get my sweet tooth satisfied. Sugar just isn’t as sweet as it used to be. It’s like everything else, they’re giving you less product so in the end you’re having to buy twice as much.
I have noticed this too! I just thought I was noticing things that weren’t really there. I use very little sugar myself but I do use a lot for humming birds in their season. Makes me wonder if I am harming them.
I’ve noticed that also.
Yes, they are using a cheaper substance. They think most people who buy popular products such as Coke and Pepsi wont notice, and though some don’t, you and I and possibly millions of others do also. It is also a less healthy substance, due to the price. I forgot what it’s called, so sorry! :(
Hope I helped, have a great day!
The problem is you are used to other foods being much sweeter because most manufacturers are now using much more high fructose corn syrup because it is cheaper than sugar and also sweeter. You have become used to the sweeter taste of these foods, but when you use just sugar in your coffee or bake goods yourself, you have to add more sugar to get the sweetness you are looking for.
I noticed too, I was blaming it to the fact that I live overseas and sometimes the quality of products is not good but now that u mention it yes sugar today is less sweeter. I used to put 1tsp in my coffee now I use 2tsp and want more.
I’m going to dig this subject and if I find something I’ll let u know.
